Lucasfilm may perhaps be best known for the sustained, astronomical success of Star Wars and the upcoming return to the archaeological adventures of Indiana Jones, but the studio previously dabbled in the fantasy genre with the release of Willow.

Although George Lucas wrote and Ron Howard directed Willow, it was not as successful as Lucas’s other blockbusters, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Since its first release in 1988, the IP has been left alone by Lucasfilm while enjoying the benefits of being a cult favourite with a consistent fanbase despite its lack of extraordinary success.

This weekend may be all about Star Wars thanks to the many announcements for the science fiction galaxy made at Star Wars Celebration, but Lucasfilm still found time to put the spotlight on Willow by releasing the film’s first teaser. The trailer, in true Lucasfilm form, gives very nothing away in terms of plot.

Instead, it gives us a taste of the new people who are entering this fantasy world while also revisiting some old favourites, such as Joanne Whalley’s Shorsha and Warwick Davis’s Willow Ufgood, who has matured and become a master sorcerer. All of this set to the timeless, unforgettable score by the late, great James Horner.

Willow TV Series Release Date

Given that Willow originates from Lucasfilm, it makes sense for the show to have its premiere on Disney+. There will be eight episodes total, and they will all be released on Wednesdays beginning on November 30, 2022.

What is the plot of the Willow TV Series?

In the original film, Willow went on a mission to bring a baby he spotted near his village to safety from a wicked sorceress. Having never been far from his little village, Willow was in uncharted terrain. There are plenty of horrible beasts and miserable minions of the terrible Empress Bavmorda for Willow to face along the way, but he also makes some great friends along the way, such the haughty but endearing swordsman Madmartigan. Although his journey was fraught with peril, Willow was able to safeguard the little kid and return home victorious, all the while developing a deep interest in and passion for the study of magic.

According to the preview, the once-amateur magician has come a long way in terms of honing and perfecting his profession, and he now exudes genuine class and swagger while staying modest. Confirmed to take place decades after the events of the film, the show finds Willow helping a young lady called Kit track down her kidnapped brother as they and a small group of allies go on a new epic journey.

Who Is Making the Willow Series?

Ron Howard will not be returning as director for the Willow series, but he will be involved as an executive producer with Kathleen Kennedy and Jonathan Kasdan, who are both regulars at Lucasfilm. Kasdan, who has collaborated with Howard on several occasions and who has written for Solo: A Star Wars Story, will also serve as the showrunner for the project. Along with John Bickerstaff (Grounded) and Hannah Friedman, Kasdan is listed as a screenwriter for the series (Obi-Wan Kenobi).

Director Jon M. Chu, of Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights, had been assigned to the project, however he has since withdrawn owing to scheduling issues. Stephen Woolfenden (Outlander), Jamie Childs (His Dark Materials), and Debs Paterson will now take on the roles of directors (A Discovery of Witches).

The Willow TV Series Cast:

More many often, it was emphasised that without the original creator, Willow wouldn’t be the same popular figure she is now. After making his debut in Return of the Jedi as Wicket, Warwick Davis has appeared in almost every Star Wars picture since in some capacity. Davis, after an impressive run of supporting parts, got the lead in a big budget film for once with Willow. Davis has long shown his fondness for the part and has spoken highly of the film’s treatment of persons with dwarfism, so it seems to reason that he would reprise it.

In addition to Davis, Joanne Whalley will be returning to the cast as Sorsha, the hostile daughter of Bavmorda who ultimately becomes Willow’s ally and protector while transporting the infant. This provides some interesting clues about the story’s potential development, since both Sorsha and Madmartigan have promised to provide a good upbringing for the kid.

Whalley’s on-screen boyfriend and real-life ex-husband Val Kilmer will not be returning, but the actor and the show’s creator, Jake Kasdan, assured fans during their Celebration panel that Kilmer’s beloved character, Madmartigan, will remain a mainstay of the show.

Newcomers round up the remainder of the cast and will eventually become Willow’s saviours. To name just a few, we have Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Game of Thrones), Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Ellie Bamber (The Nutcracker and the Four Realms), Dempsey Bryk (Black Mirror), Ruby Cruz (Mare of Easttown) as Kit, Sorsha’s daughter, Amar Chadha-Patel (The Third Day) as Boorman, a thief, Talis

Ralph Ineson (The Green Knight) will play Commander Ballontine, while Mr. Robot’s Christian Slater will appear in an unspecified position related to Madmartigan.
