The Plot of The Pale Blue Eye

The narrative of the book is carried over into the film The Pale Blue Eye. In the year 1830, the corpse of a young cadet was found hanging from a rope not far from the parade grounds at West Point Academy. It seems to be an act of suicide; nevertheless, the next morning, something absolutely awful takes place.

Someone entered the room where the corpse was lay out and snatched the heart before leaving with the body. Augustus “Gus” Landor, played by Christian Bale, is a former police detective from New York City who retired to the Hudson Highlands for health reasons. The Academy is at a loss for explanations and is keen to prevent any unfavourable press, so they enlist the skills of a local citizen.

Gus, who has now become a restless widower, decides to come out of retirement in order to take on the case. As he questions the deceased man’s friends and acquaintances, he discovers an eager assistant in the form of a gloomy and intriguing young cadet. This young man has written two volumes of poetry, enjoys a drink or two, and has a mysterious past that frequently varies depending on who is telling the story.
